The food was delicious. Service was friendly. The ambiance was nice for lunch. Roti paratha (5/5): Must order! It was crispy and flaky and the curry sauce was full of flavor. Lumpia (4/5): it was crispy and good, but standard for an egg roll. Rames (4/5): love the sampling of different items. The turmeric chicken was a bit dry, but I saved that delicious curry sauce the roti paratha came with and it made the chicken much better. The garlic green beans were tender, but still had some bite. The beef rendang was tender and coconuty. Festival rice (4/5): the chicken sate was the star and full of deliciousness from the sauce. The noodles were not as hot in temperature as the other items. Sambal egg was okay, but this was my first time trying one. We'll definitely be back to try more dishes. Parking can be tough in the small lot and there's always delivery drivers parked outside too, but they're in and out pretty quick.

First thing to say is VERY authentic! I love Indonesian food and having spent a whole month out there I know a little thing or two about the food and their flavors. Simpang Asia is a great spot to go if you're looking for true Indonesian food at a not to known local spot with a super cute interior and ambiance. A very welcoming and calm vibe. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The Thai tea is probably some of the best I've ever had. Most places over due it on the sweetness but this one is literally perfection. They top it beautifully as well and it's about $5 or a little less. I love love love Roti and here they give a small personal serving versus a "family size" portion - which is nice for if you're eating alone. Less than $6. They sauce is a curry sauce and not a peanut sauce so if your allergic to nuts this is a good option for you. I tried the Spicy garlic chicken (not sure the name) which was amazingggg (8.5/10), the Tilapia (whole fish) (8/10) and the calamari - the calamari itself (9/10) was really good however I did not like the sauce it came with which was just normal sweet and sour sauce. They also have a selection on wine!

This is one of 2 locations (the other in Venice) and is a fantastic restaurant for authentic Indonesian food. They have a great menu with so many amazing options. The roti paratha and the chicken sate are perfect appetizers to start with. I really enjoyed the nasi bungku, served like a paper present you have to unwrap to reveal a bed of rich flavors and aromas consisting of chicken curry, beef rendang, sambal egg, veggies and rice on a banana leaf. The Soto is the perfect remedy when you're feeling a little under the weather. It's like medicine in a bowl. The bihun goreng is a staple noodle dish, also a great option to-go or for leftovers. They had one dessert, the martabak manis, which was a different and interestingly good double stack pancake soaked in condensed milk with a layer of chocolate, cheese, crispy sesame seeds, and grated peanuts in the middle. Great friendly service and easily accessible parking lot in front.

Tertawa itu paling riang di tempat makanan tersedia. / "Laughter is brightest in the place where the food is." It has been many decades since a former culinary arts colleague from Malaysia shared this Indonesian quote before inviting my husband and me to his family home in Kuala Lumpur. My colleague often frequented our home while introducing many of his homeland recipes to my family. He opened our tastebuds to the myriad of spices, aromatics, and textures of many Southeast Asian cuisines that Honolulu didn't commercially have. So, during a recent Southeast Asian cruise and a visit to Singapore, our tastebuds were excited by the exotic yet familiar flavors I remember my former colleague for. In addition to having our tastebuds fired up for Indonesian food from our cruise, I remembered reading a review from fellow Yelp Friend Arshad H and bookmarking Simpang Asia last year. So, we made it a point to try this restaurant. We were impressed by the reservation booking process but had a problem (constant busy signal) contacting them to inform them of a time change in our plans. However, we sorted it out when our party arrived at the restaurant since we arrived almost two hours before our confirmed reservation. The outside temperature was a sizzling 97°F, so we first welcomed the cool air conditioning. However, after placing our food order, we noticed cold air blasting, but we shrugged it off as our friendly server delivered and described our delicious food. But that's when my former colleague's Indonesian quote popped into my head, and I couldn't stop laughing, which my husband and brother-in-law caught like an infectious flu. During the meal, we started shivering while laughing to keep our bodies warm. FOOD: -Chicken Sate: sate or satay originated in Java, Indonesia, and is a dish of seasoned, skewered, and grilled meat served with peanut sauce. The skewered and grilled chicken was tender, juicy and well-flavored. Unlike Thai satay, Indonesian peanut sauce is less sweet because it draws its umami from kecap manis (thick, sweet soy sauce) instead of coconut milk, which my husband and brother-in-law prefer. 4/$14.95 -Risoles: risoles are Indonesian rissoles (flattened cakes of chopped and seasoned meat, fish or vegetables that is breaded with breadcrumbs and deep fried). Simpang Asia's version is a creamy chicken filling wrapped in a crepe, breaded, and deep fried. The risoles were served with a slightly spicy sambal mayonnaise. This appetizer resembled chicken pot pie hand pies. 2/$8.50 -Beef Rendang: slow-cooked beef steak curry with bold coconut curry flavor. I learned from my colleague the difference between authentic Indonesian and Malaysian rendang beef: how the rendang is cooked and the addition of kerisik (toasted coconut butter). I was skeptical of ordering this entree since my husband and brother-in-law don't seek out coconut; however, they found Simpang Asia's rendang very flavorful and its slow-cooked beef very tender. $27.95 -Nasi Goreng (Fried Rice) with Chicken: Although Indonesians commonly eat nasi goreng for breakfast, nasi goreng can be served as either a primary or side dish. My carbs-loving dining mates chose this tasty fried rice dish with the beef rendang entree. Being Asian, I wondered if belacan (shrimp paste) would be one of the ingredients, but unfortunately, I didn't taste it. However, I tasted the sweet savoriness of kecap manis. $14.95 -Mie Tek Tek: I had only heard about Mie Tek Tek from my former colleague, and I was excited to see this vintage street food on the menu. This fried egg noodle (mie/mee) with eggs, cabbage, chicken, and Chinese cabbage dish gets its name from the wok stir-frying sound (tek tek) from street food vendors. Its signature sweet, savory, and sticky kecap manis sauce enhances and pulls all of the ingredients together $14.95 If we hadn't shivered from the cold air-conditioning blasts, we would have ordered their sole dessert item (Martabak Manis), but we quickly exited the clean, colorful, and Halal restaurant. Ah, perhaps next time should we return, we'll bring or wear light sweaters or jackets and stay to order dessert.
